Check out previous Screenshot Saturdays! I think that, if anything, its either that people do not want to make these games or, if they do, that they THINK its hard and will require bunches of scripts. So I created this little post to describe my ideas on how it can be done to show that it doesn't have to be hard and can be done majority by events.
This was the original post where I typed this up. I have no working demo for this and most likely will not, so I cannot guarantee everything will work as explained.
Feel free to comment issues with my design or alternative ways to achieve these systems. If you wanted the plant stages to have idle animations, like blowing in t he wind, you could have each row of the character sheet be a stage of growth, like so:. As every game will require character art that uses this animation format, it wouldn't be any extra work over a normal RPG.
Just trading the vast array of characters a RPG would use into the vast amount of plants a Harvest sim would use. Only difficult part here is the actual planting system itself. Best way is a script, but I've seen clever people do it with some rather complex events before so it is possible, just probably not worth the reward over not using a script.
For animals, this is easy. So, say the player can own 10 cows. Make 10 invisible cow events on the map that are tied to a Cows Owned variable, each one 'appearing' at a different variable amount So if the Cows Owned is 5, cows appear but will not.
If you want a realistic passage of time, make each cow check a variable unique to it self variables work and save space but will only count the time you are on the same map as the cow. When the variable hits a certain number, can milk the cow. If you want the cows to reset each day, have the cows have a self variable that gets set to the last day milked so if you milk it on day 22, this variable will equal Make a conditional so the cow can only be milked if the Day variable described in the time system below is NOT equal to its self variable meaning the day is different.
If you're worried about players waiting a whole month to milk a cow again, you can also check the month the same way if you wish. Not really a pain, aside from creating the assets. Create four tilesets in exactly the same order IE in the first tile on a sheet in ground, all four sheets need ground in that exact position. Same for buildings, objects, etc. The only difference should be the season it represents.
In the end, you should have four identical tilesets, one for each season. Then you just have to draw the map once, copy it 4 times and change the tileset on each one so you have one for each season. Based on the variable's value, send the player to the correct map. Since most RPGs will have multiple map tilesets anyway, this isn't that much more work that making any other RPG within the system.
Rather than adding additional maps, you can also use the Change Tileset command. You could also do this by just using the "Change Tileset" command, if there's no additional structures. Having multiple maps is more robust and allows for more freedom, but just changing tileset saves you from potentially copying or transferring events.Suggest description for this tag. Tools will be like an harb knife, a pickaxe, etc. Crafting and farming are where I am coming up with some issues. Crafting I can either have as a skillset that calls common events, however I do not want this crafting skill to be available during battle nothing can be crafted during battle. Obviously, I would prefer the first option. Just the skill showing up in the battle menu issue.
Does anyone have a workaround or solution for that? I see if I used SV for battle i can specify skills for that -- can i use that to make sure crafting is not available during battle? I'd like to give my player a small plot of land to farm and grow some crops to either sell or use in crafting.
It is not a farming type game, but it is a perk the player may receive for doing things in the game and is desired to make things a little easier and more accessible for them.
Only some things will be able to be farmed. I'm not exactly sure how to implement this without it being messy to the player. An option I have toyed with is an employee or helper the player just goes to and the employee says 'hey, whatcha want me to plant?
That almost destroys the desire to have a specific 'this is the farming plot attached to your house' map. Does anyone have any good ideas for this? Showing 1 - 2 of 2 comments.
